With the salvation of Millennials and Generation X people, there has also risen resistance and objections to formal membership or official alignment with organized religion (local churches).  This issue is relatively new to Christianity.  Just twenty-five years ago it would have been very uncommon to be a professing Christian and not be formally united to a local church.  There is no direct command in Scripture for a person to formally become a member of a local church.  However, formal membership is redundantly inferred throughout the New Testament.
